I’m going home!

Well, it’s confirmed – I’m finally going home for Christmas. I booked my tickets today and I’m taking a month off over Christmas. The flights are going to cost an arm and a leg though because apparently I should have booked my flights about 5 years ago.

I’m taking P with me to meet my family. He’s really excited because he’s always wanted to go to New Zealand and keeps telling me he wants to move there (he’ll have to knock me up for that – it’s the only way I’m moving home at the moment, but that’s not going to happen!).

So, on the 18th of December, we leave Manchester for Dubai where we are staying for 3 nights. Then we will be in New Zealand for 20 nights, and are stopping over in Brisbane on the way back for 3 nights. I’m really excited about Dubai – it looks like a really gorgeous city. I’m also really excited about seeing my family and friends! And my neice who turned 3 last week! And Wellington! God, I miss you Wellington! I can’t wait to wander around town, drink coffee, go to motel bar, shop! We’ll also do some travelling around the North Island, which will be great. We’re going to go to Waitomo Caves and abseil down a hole. I’ve always wanted to do that, yay!

I can’t wait!

EUWDPCpix™ image viewer

I have been meaning to write about this software for ages, because I get quite a few emails about it from people who’ve seen it in use in my photo directory.

EUWDPCpixâ„¢ is an image viewing script that makes browsing images online really simple. You can see it in action in my photo section.

So, why is EUWDPCpixâ„¢ so good? Well, first of all, it is completely CSS customisable, so you can make it look however you want it to look. However, I think the best features are a little more technical.

You may or may not know, but most photos taken with digital cameras (or saved with software like Adobe Photoshop) save what is called EXIF data into the image file. EXIF data contains information such as thumbnails, time and date taken, exposure, aperture, file size, camera used, and loads more. EUWDPCpixâ„¢ extracts this data so you can view it as you browse. And because most photos have embedded thumbnails that aren’t used, it cuts down on load times because thumbnails aren’t generated.

EUWDPCpixâ„¢ also has an admin system to add comments and create thumbnails for images that don’t have them embedded in the EXIF data. To boot, it’s easy to install and manage.

I really think this is a great image viewer, especially for digital photographers. I could be biased because my boyfriend P coded it, but it was in the Guardian a month or so ago, so it must be good!

Dear Queen Elizabeth, please take my money

Today I started my permanent job. Once again, I have my own desk, my own computer, and my own telephone with too many buttons. About time too.

Even thought I’ve been temping for the past 6 weeks, it doesn’t really feel like I’ve been working since I left the States. However, I was obviously doing something right at my temp job because my boss took me out to lunch and gave me a gift and a card the day I left. Obviously, I’m totally awesome.

I think I am going to have to give up the desk job at some point. Probably some point far, far away, but, still. I’ve been going to a chiropractor for the last few weeks because my back is totally out of alignment. A bunch of my joints are inflammed, and as I write this I have an icepack on my back. I guess that’ll teach me for having such bad posture.

Also, I’ve been in Manchester for two months and out of the States for almost four. Doesn’t feel like it. I’ve been really slack about taking photos, but here are some of Manchester anyway.

Manchester: Good & Bad

Good Bad
City centre living Cost of living
No Texas rednecks Chavs
Not 40ËšC in summer Not 20ËšC in summer
Can understand people better That is a lie, real English accents (not BBC) are fucked
Loads of good Indian food No good Mexican food
Nice corner stores Everything shuts early
Better tasting food Everything sold in tiny wee bags
Standard shot measurements Pubs close at 11pm
Can actually talk politics Not nearly as fun to mock someone who can read
People know where New Zealand is They still think I’m Australian
People understand sarcasm Still don’t have any friends
