• Our house is apparently the 2nd to oldest in Arch Hill, built around 1870, and used to be the shepherd’s hut for King’s farm which took up most of Arch Hill across to Kingsland.
• His house was built in 1890 and there is a secret well on his property that he can’t find. His kids also think their house is haunted and often see things in mirrors and lights turn on by themselves.
• Two hare krishnas blew themselves up accidentally across the road in 1976. They were planning on blowing up the meat works but accidentally did themselves instead. Their body parts were all over Great North Road and the street, and they found an arm on a roof of one of the warehouses. The shockwave tipped over cabinets and water cylinders in houses in the neighbourhood.
• A guy who went to a party at our house in the ’80s murdered another guy at the party – slit his throat and dumped him in a skip on the corner of the street and then went back to the party.
• A girl called Emily was murdered by her baby-daddy and whose hand in marriage she declined in 1875.  She used to haunt the kindergarten down the end of the road until 6 years ago when they had a religious blessing on the site.

Some little boys like Beyonce. Which is not surprising because I myself find her videos mesmerising.

Some babies dance like Beyonce. Wish I had those moves!

Some little boys love Florence & The Machine. It’s a little bit classical. I get that.

Some babies love reggae. I also get that, having listened to Bob Marley’s best of on vinyl over and over and a teenager.

Some kids prefer something a bit more bass heavy. Complete with strong bass squishy nose. Sometimes that bass tickles your nostrils!

Some kids are born destined to be ravers.

Shit dude, some babies can even breakdance.

What could complete this list of dancing babies? Of course, the original dancing baby. Long live sk_baby.max.

1. Be authentic. The most powerful asset you have is your individuality, what makes you unique. It’s time to stop listening to others on what you should do.
2. Work harder than anyone else and you will always benefit from the effort.
3. Get off the computer and connect with real people and culture. Life is visceral.
4. Constantly improve your craft. Make things with your hands. Innovation in thinking is not enough.
5. Travel as much as you can. It is a humbling and inspiring experience to learn just how much you don’t know.
6. Being original is still king, especially in this tech-driven, group-grope world.
7. Try not to work for stupid people or you’ll soon become one of them.
8. Instinct and intuition are all-powerful. Learn to trust them.
9. The Golden Rule actually works. Do good.
10. If all else fails, No. 2 is the greatest competitive advantage of any career.

I’ve been watching TV and reading the news over the past week, and the thing that has struck me is the Kiwi spirit.  We are resilient, we still have a sense of community, and we generally give a fuck about each other.  Immediately people risked their own lives to save others, people offered their houses to strangers, gave away food, had impromptu block parties and barbeques, and people rallied to find ways to assist those that needed it. It’s our spirit that makes us Kiwis, and it’s one of the things that makes me proud to be a New Zealander.
